In Memory of John A. Dill
WOL 1450 DEE JAY (Johnny Dee)
June 30, 1941 to September 12, 2002

Johnny Dee John Allen Dill, fondly know as “Johnny Dee”, was born in Lexington, Kentucky on June 30, 1941.  He moved to Washington, DC where he graduated from Eastern High School in Washington, DC.  After graduating, he joined the United States Army and served on the 82 Air Borne Infantry as a weapons expert and parachutist.  He was also a member of the Presidential Honor Guard, which brought great pride to his family.  After receiving an honorable discharge, John began working with his father and brothers in the automobile sales business.  His dad always tried to instill in his children the value of learning to do more than one thing in life. John remembered this lesson well, as he later worked as a shoe salesman, accountant, and car salesman at Curtis Chevrolet before beginning his career in broadcasting. He attended Columbia School of Broadcasting and Federal City College, now know as UDC.

His career in broadcasting lead him to WOOK radio in DC, WEAM radio in Falls Church, VA, WSIB radio in Beaufort, South Carolina, WEAS radio in Savannah, Georgia, and most recently with WOL radio in DC, now know as RADIO ONE, INC.

In the past years, Johns health began to fail when he was diagnosed with the rare neurological disorder know as SYRINGOMYELIA.  Upon retiring from (on air) broadcasting, John continued to be an active employee with RADIO ONE, INC.

As an (on air) DEE JAY during the early days of black music, Johnny Dee was a very familiar voice on the DC airwaves. During the Christmas holidays you could always look forward to John providing an entertaining program that was created strictly for the children.  John would play the roll of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and he would have someone else in the studio play the role of Santa Claus..it was really something special to hear.

John always ended his show with the following statement: “IT’S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT, BUT MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE…TRUST ME!  “…JOHNNY DEE
